‘Drown him’ case: Cops raid property

By Andrew King POLICE HAVE raided a house and seized shoes and a cellphone as they close in on teenagers involved in the ‘drown him’ assault case. Four teenagers attacked a 15-year-old, dragged him to a water race and held his head underwater chanting “drown him.” The incident took place in Rolleston on November 4 after a fireworks display. The victim spent the night in hospital because of his injuries. Police have been tight-lipped over their investigation since the attack was revealed by The Star last month. But yesterday they confirmed a search warrant was executed on a Rolleston property last week. “Police have executed a search warrant in regard to this matter as we continue to gather evidence,” a spokeswoman said. “Police have identified people of interest and no one else is being sought. Police are continuing to support the victim.” The Star has learned shoes and a cellphone were seized. But police would not discuss any specifics of what was taken in the raid. The teenager was assaulted when he allegedly refused to hand over his cap after he was confronted by four other teenagers on Tennyson St at about 10.30pm on November 4.

And when it does you either stand and fight, make a run for it, or give up. Emely van Ras (see page 4,5) has the fight gene. And she needed it when she found an intruder in her house in the early hours of the morning. Running was not an option with young children, asleep, in the house. So Emely’s fight gene kicked in. She took control of the situation, and let the intruder know she wasn’t giving in without a fight. That’s easier said than done, but it worked, and the suspect is now in custody. So what is fight or flight? It’s a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival. Physiological changes are activated to give the body increased strength and speed in anticipation of fighting or running. Great stuff Emely. – Barry Clarke

Dalziel expected charges over CTV MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel has said publicly for the first time she thought there would have been a prosecution over the collapse of the CTV Building. In her weekly column for The Star on page 22, Ms Dalziel said the police decision not to prosecute over the building’s collapse had caused enormous distress

among some of the families of those killed. “I truly believed the decision would be otherwise.” The CTV Building pancaked in the 6.3 magnitude February 22, 2011, earthquake, killing 115 people. Some of the families say they will not give up the fight for justice after police announced

they would not pursue criminal charges. Ms Dalziel said the Crown Law advice was to prosecute, but the deputy solicitor general’s interpretation of the prosecution guidelines determined otherwise. Ms Dalziel said she could not publicly express her opinion while the police investigation

was under way. The Governors Bay Hotel owner learned his lesson the hard way after his e-cigarette sparked two fire call-outs over the past few weeks. The culprit is a new Type-4 fire alarm system which has proved to be more sensitive than he thought. “Once you set it off, you get the fire brigade at your door 6min later,” Mr Dyer said. “They’re extremely efficient.” The first incident happened about two weeks ago at 2am. The second was on Saturday, December 2. In Brief CRASH VICTIM NAMED The Christchurch man killed in a crash on the Rakaia Bridge on Tuesday was 48-year-old Ian Adrian Yee. Mr Yee was killed when the vehicle he was in collided with a truck on State Highway 1 at about 2.42pm. Two ambulances and a helicopter were sent to the scene and another person was taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries. The road was closed causing massive traffic delays until about 9.30pm. The serious crash unit is investigating. $20M SPENT ON REPAIRS Repairing the city council’s heritage buildings has cost more than $20 million so far. Mother of two Intruder charged with three aggravated burglaries

By Sarla Donovan A MOTHER of two has revealed how she confronted an armed intruder in her home in the early hours of the morning and forced him to leave. Emely van Ras used a ceremonial Fijian “skull crusher” to hold the man off. Miss van Ras was woken at 3am in her Scarborough home when she heard her gate squeak and thought it was her dog. She got out of bed, put on her dressing gown, and went downstairs where she found a man crouching on the floor of the kitchen. He stood up. Miss van Ras said, “who the f*** are you?” The man then pulled out a knife. “I thought about the kids downstairs asleep and started backing towards

She told him she didn’t have any and asked him to please leave. He saw her mobile phone on the bedside table. “What’s that?” She said it was her phone and she backed around towards it. She offered him jewellery. “I said please, take my jewellery.“ “I don’t want that,” he said and demanded the phone. The intruder then said: “Stay here till I leave,” He then left, closing the bedroom door behind him. “As soon as I heard the front door, I ran downstairs. He’d left it open behind him – I locked it and called the police.” “The children came in while I was on the phone. That’s when it set in – I was shaking and cold,” she said

A week later police arrested a 31-year-old and charged him with three aggravated burglaries in Scarborough, Mt Pleasant, Sumner and Redcliffs. Police are still investigating a fourth home invasion-type burglary. The home invasions and other crime in the area has prompted the formation of the Safer Sumner group, which is fundraising to buy two CCTV security cameras for the area. Miss van Ras is part of the group. Residents had been concerned for a number of years that property-related crime in the area was on the rise. Police Tactical Crime Unit Senior Constable Nigel Barton said there had been a “spike” in property-related crime in the area from mid-September through to early November, including the four aggravated burglaries.

Ratepayers fork out for Fanfare By Bridget Rutherford THE FANFARE artwork may have been a gift, but it will cost ratepayers tens of thousands of dollars to maintain over the years. The Neil Dawson sculpture, which sits near Chaneys Corner next to the Northern Motorway, was installed in June 2015. City council head of parks Brent Smith said it had cost about $12,060 to maintain it since it was installed. He said those costs were mainly related to replacing the power box. On top of that, the city council had to pay for the electricity to power the sphere sculpture’s colourful lights, he said. “The lights are not solar powered and cost $588 per year in electricity charges.” Mr Smith said every year, the sculpture needed a structural inspection, light maintenance, a power box check, a touch up of galvanised paint to protect it from rust, and weed and litter removal. That costs about $4800. Every five years, five per cent of the 360 spinning steel fans need to be replaced, along with any other steel that required it, at

Well known teacher faces another Chris Todd has just retired after teaching for 31 years at Christchurch Boys’ High School. She also has terminal cancer – shattering to most, Toddy, as she is affectionately known, is taking it in her stride. Julia Evans reports CHRIS TODD knew she had cancer before her doctor said the word. The Christchurch Boys’ High School maths and athletics teacher, known as Toddy, figured it out after being sent for blood tests and CT scans. From the stomach down, then from the neck down, then just in her liver. “I didn’t drink, I wasn’t overweight. There shouldn’t have been anything wrong,” she said. She was referred to an oncologist. “A little voice in my head said something wasn’t right . . . I hadn’t been told it was cancer but I was seeing an oncologist. I knew by that stage,” she said. It was on April 10, 2014, when her doctor finally said she had a gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumour. “I said yeah, alright. I know . . . the doctor said start working on your bucket list.” She was told it had spread and she was terminal. There are 27

tumours in her hip bone – she calls them The Fockers. The cancer is inoperable, it’s the same kind that Apple founder Steve Jobs died of in 2011. “When I was told it was a rare form of cancer I said good. I wouldn’t want the garden variety,” Miss Todd said. “I went and told my friends, it is cancer but it’s no big deal. I can still remember the look on their faces.” She said she feels blessed that they can’t be operated on. “In my opinion, the less you’re cut open, the better.” Miss Todd has now retired after 31 years at CBHS, teaching maths and a time as head of sport. She said it was a difficult decision to make as the school had been her life since 1986. But she won’t really be leaving. “I’ve set up in my will for my money to go into a scholarship for boys’ high runners,” she said.

Miss Todd’s entire estate will go towards helping athletic and multi-sport students attend events they might not otherwise afford, following her death. But since her diagnosis, the active Sumner resident has been doing everything in her power to finish her bucket list. Which has included several trips to cycle the Alpes d’Huez section of the Tour de France. Her oncologist said she would feel better just having coffee with her friends at home. But instead of heeding the advice, Miss Todd made it her mission. “I sent a photo of me at the top of the Alpes d’Huez. It’s in the waiting room of the clinic now,” she said. And she’s got plans to go back next year. “Hopefully, I’ll die coming off my bike on a hill in France.” Cycling is a relatively new thing for Miss Todd, she had competed solely as a runner until 2008 when she started riding.

“Someone said don’t give Toddy a bike, she only knows how to run. It’s a bad idea to tell me I can’t do something.” A year later in 2009 she was competing in the World Duathalon Championships in Concord, California. Then again the following year in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a further year in Gijon, Spain, where she came fourth in her age group. Even now she cycles for several hours a day on her stationary bicycle: “To spite The Fockers.” But Miss Todd’s first passion has always been running. She used to go on a two-hour run through the Port Hills every morning before cycling to CBHS via Governors Bay and the Sign of the Kiwi. The running stopped, not because of the cancer, but a botched hip replacement which she said was “harder to come to terms with than The Fockers.” “I’m a bit of a street fighter . . . if I’m told I can’t do something, I’ll do it . . . the cancer became another challenge,” Miss Todd said. More than $50,000 was raised for Miss Todd to be able to have radiation treatment in Mel-

By Bridget Rutherford THE CITY council is not currently considering changing its logo in spite of uncertainty around what the main element of it will look like in the future. The logo currently features a rough outline of the Christ Church Cathedral, including its spire. It was last updated in 2007. The Anglican Diocese of Christchurch announced in September it would restore the earthquake-damaged historic Cathedral, after a vote by its synod. But it is unknown at this stage how the tall spire will be rebuilt. City council head of public information and participation Dianne Keenan said any change to the logo would be a “political decision.” “And the council is not currently considering it.” The city council has done consultation on whether it should put $10 million into the Cathedral’s restoration. Of the 1063 submissions received, 481 supported the idea, while 579 did not. City councillors will analyse the feedback and listen to submissions at a hearing today.

Peter MacCullum Cancer Centre, she was told she “wasn’t sick enough.” But Miss Todd wrote a PhDlike essay on all of the reasons she was suitable for the treatment. A month later she was having the first round. “I say to people it’s a bit like earthquake repairs. You’ve got to manage it yourself,” she said. The treatment stunted The Fockers’ growth, she said. The tumours haven’t grown in more than two years. Although Miss Todd said she’s fully aware they will “rear their heads again.” When they do, she’s going to have a massive party. “Terminal cancer really changes your attitude to life. The little things bother you less.” Until then she still has a few things to tick off that bucket list she was told to start: “I want to still be alive to ride the Sumner Rd again.”

Holiday season – a time for food, By Bridget Rutherford IF YOU’RE planning on going cycling or mountain biking during the silly season – be careful. Latest ACC data shows they were some of the most common causes of injuries in Christchurch last year in the week between Christmas and New Year. ACC received 71 claims for cycling injuries during that time last year, costing $66,324, and 63 for mountain biking with claims totalling $40,145. Those wanting to enjoy a bit of competitive backyard cricket with the family may also need to take care. There were 33 outdoor cricket related injuries, costing $10,959. Soccer and jogging, as well as fitness training or the gym caused high numbers of injuries, followed by skateboarding and horse riding. Horse riding and skateboarding claims were more expensive, costing about $18,000 each. Soft tissue injuries were the most common over the same period last year, with 1540 claims lodged. That was followed by 631 lacerations, punctures and stings – so take care carving the turkey.

Lacerations also accounted for a large number of hospital visits.

There were 274 fractures or dislocations, 62 dental injuries, 33 concussions and 27 burns. On Christmas Day alone last year there were 320 injury claims in Christchurch, more than the 280 the year prior. There were 2752 in total between then and New Year’s Day – totalling just over $2 million. And although they may seem harmless, Christmas trees and pine needles can cause injuries as well. There were 13 Christmas tree and pine needle-related injuries last year. Christmas lights were the cause of four.

An ACC spokesman said people were more likely to fall and injure themselves during summer. “That’s because most of us take our main holidays over the Christmas and New Year period, when we tend to spend more time at home, and often take on DIY and gardening projects.” People needed to be realistic about their ability to do DIY jobs around the house, wear appropriate protection and use the right equipment, he said. He said when out doing recreational activities, be sure to warm up and cool down.

Many people will be decorating their trees or homes. He said it was best to use a step ladder, ensure the tree had a sturdy base, and make sure any power cords don’t run along the floor. “Keep pets out from under people’s feet – every year a significant number are injured tripping over cats and dogs.” With Christmas and New Year festivities often came alcohol. ACC is urging people to remember to eat and drink water alongside alcohol, set a limit and stick to it, and look after your mates.

ACC received 166 claims for soft tissue injuries for kids aged 0-14 in Christchurch, costing $31,667. That was followed by 128 laceration, punctures or stings, with claims totalling $17,916. Fractures and dislocations were the cause of 66 injuries, while there were 11 dental injuries. Concussion made up 11 claims. So did “foreign body in orifice/eye” injuries. Some of those injuries related to splinters dust or grass in eyes or ears, and some “jewellery-related issues.” Those injuries cost $8591. On Christmas Day in Christchurch alone last year, there were 67 injuries to kids. In the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day there were 437. In total ACC paid out $116,582. Cycling was the most common sports injury for kids during that period last year.

An ACC spokesman said they could not tell whether any injuries were caused by Christmas presents.

But he said a noticeable trend from last year was the number of injuries relating to trampolines – 16.

Could men and women compete?

SPORT SHOULD be split by ability, not gender. Those are the views of Lincoln University senior lecturer Roslyn Kerr. Her new paper Reassembling sex: Reconsidering sex segregation policies in sport has been published in the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics. In it, she said athletes should compete based on the traits resulting in superior performance in that particular sport, such as height, aerobic capacity, or lean body mass. It comes Roslyn Kerr three weeks after transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard was selected to compete in the New Zealand team at next year’s Commonwealth Games. Ms Hubbard changed gender about four years ago, and many have questioned whether she has an unfair advantage because she was previously a man. Dr Kerr is head of Lincoln’s department of tourism, sport and society.

“There is no clear connection between a person’s sex and their sporting ability. Instead, the argument that men are superior to women in sport is based only on statistical averages,” Dr Kerr said. “Sporting results currently indicate that there is an overlapping continuum between male and female performance. If you look at a mixed gender marathon, while the top finishers are men, women often finish within the top 10, meaning that many women do outperform many men regularly.” Dr Kerr said athletes possessed

a range of other traits that would influence their sporting performances, arguably more strongly than their sex. “There are no classifications based on height, in spite of athletes in many sports receiving a significant advantage from being tall.” Dr Kerr said she wanted a classification system introduced. She said the system would open up space for smaller and less muscular men to compete in sports they normally would not. Current controversies, such as the case of South African

800m runner Caster Semenya, have highlighted how the gender policy does not encompass all bodies, Dr Kerr said. Semenya competes as a woman, but has internal testes, which made her testosterone levels three times that of an average woman. Many said her hormones gave her an unfair advantage. “Genetic advantages associated with sex have resulted in athletes being banned from competing while other traits, such as Michael Phelps’ ideal swimming physique, unusually good eyesight in baseballers, large

hands and feet in basketballers or increased aerobic capacity in cyclists are applauded in spite of being similarly unique genetic conditions.” Dr Kerr said gender-based sport may be a form of discrimination. $3.4m on red zone upkeep Resident continues to pitch in By Bridget Rutherford THE Government has spent $3.4 million on maintenance, security and rates for red zoned land in the last year. Figures released to The Star show in the 2016/17 financial year, Land Information New Zealand had spent $1.1 million on maintenance, such as mowing, weeding, pest removal, arborists and removing rubbish in the residential red zone. It spent a further $300,000 on maintenance of red zoned land on the Port Hills. The red zones need to be mowed monthly. LINZ also needs to do “treatment” to make sure the land is in a park-like state and easy to mow and maintain, which includes clearing vegetation and any remaining fences, laying topsoil and sowing grass. It cost $400,000 to do that in the more than 600ha residential red zone last

year and $800,000 for the land on the Port Hills. Rates for both areas cost $600,000 in the last year, and community security was $300,000. LINZ took on the role of managing the red zone areas after the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority was disestablished last year.

Up until November 2015, it cost $38.8 million for all maintenance, land treatment, security and rates, and $4.1 million from December 2015 to June 2016. However, the Government does get a bit of help. Bryan Fairbairn has been mowing 9ha of land along New Brighton Rd for more than three years, most of

which he pays for himself. LINZ Crown property deputy chief executive Jerome Sheppard said its day-to-day management work included mowing, weeding and tree removal, as well as working closely with security contractors who patrolled the areas. Polo comes back to Hagley Park

By Bridget Rutherford THE POUNDING of hooves and the thwack of a polo ball will return to South Hagley Park in January for the first time in more than two decades. The Armstrong Prestige Hagley Park Polo 2018 will be held on January 21. The free event is the brain child of New Zealand polo player and event owner, Jimmy Wood (left), whose father Roddy Wood runs Waireka Polo Centre in Sefton. Jimmy Wood and his two brothers play professional polo. Event organiser Sophie Gardner said the Wood family had dreamed of returning the sport to Hagley Park, and had finally got the go ahead from the city council. “Jimmy’s family have been trying to get polo back into Hagley Park for a few years now. It’s our first year and we are hoping to run it year-on-year and for it to become an annual social event,” she said. “It’s about raising awareness

Testing their Japanese skills at the source Japanese language students at Ara will have the chance to try out their skills in Japan in January and February thanks to a new round of Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia. The scholarships fund a six-week study trip to Miyazaki University on the eastern coast of the island of Kyushu where students will take language and cultural courses and join a community internship in the mountainous region north of Miyazaki, home to the unique TakachihogoShiibayama Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry System - a UN ‘Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System’. Eight students selected for the opportunity in early 2017 found that their language skills prepared them for the experience and they could talk to locals with confidence. “Japanese language study at Ara is set apart by the emphasis placed on oral language skills, and the intensive nature of the courses so students quickly become confident at engaging in conversations in Japanese,” Director of International Beth Knowles says. “Graduates of the programme are well equipped to speak confidently and develop bilingual skills for a range of situations - in social, academic and professional environments - so that they can go on to study or work in Japan.” There is nothing like visiting the country and speaking the language with local people, Beth says. “Students benefit so much from this type

News Lanes for coastal pathway

LANES WILL be marked to separate cyclists and pedestrians on the Christchurch Coastal Pathway which starts at the Ferrymead Bridge. The measures are needed, the Coastal Pathway Group said as the path was attracting an increasing number of cyclists – peaking at about 5pm Chairman Scott Babington said, outside that time, there were currently about 100 walkers and cyclists a day passing through Scott Park, the busiest part of the pathway. He said on the whole, the two groups shared the pathway well, but it made sense to provide markings and signs informing users it was a shared space. The New Zealand Transport Agency doesn’t impose a speed limit on shared pathways, but Mr Babington said it may need to consider introducing one. “Especially with the advent of electric bikes which may use the pathway and are often very powerful and used by inexperienced cyclists.”

Driver crossed in front of bus Crash could have ended in disaster By Georgia O’Connor-Harding MORE DETAILS have emerged of how lucky passengers on a bus, and the driver of the car it collided with, were in a crash at the intersection of Dawsons and Jones Rds in Rolleston. Police have revealed the driver who caused the crash followed another vehicle across Jones Rd from Dawsons Rd at about 20km/h without apparently checking if vehicles were coming. Said Constable Nick Lewis: “He came up behind another car going through the intersection and because the other car was going through, he just assumed it was safe and followed the other car through without stopping.” The bus was travelling at about 85km/h. The bus driver took evasive action, but the vehicles collided. The bus stopped under trees in a paddock. The car was extensively damaged.

Luckily no-one was injured. But Constable Lewis said the crash could have ended in disaster. He said the bus driver’s only option was to swerve left. It avoided the bus broad-siding the car. “He did what any prudent driver would do in an attempt to avoid a sudden obstruction,” Constable Lewis said. “A bus that size isn’t going to stop on time . . . he tried braking and it happened so quick,” The intersection is known for major crashes.

In 2015, a concrete truck rolled into a hedge after it was hit by a van load of tourists who failed to stop. But Constable Lewis said it

is not the intersection that is dangerous; it is people choosing to ignore the warning signs. “It has got stops signs there that are clearly visible . . . but for some reason when I am on patrol, I see people going through there at high speeds – 50, 60, 70km/h – and most of them are locals,” he said. Constable Lewis said any given week, multiple people will ignore the stop sign. The car driver was fined $150 for failing to stop at an intersection, said Constable Lewis.

Some of the families of those killed in the CTV Building collapse will meet with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to discuss the police decision not to prosecute

I thought there would have been a prosecution THE decision not to prosecute the designers of the CTV building has caused enormous distress among many of the families and friends of those who lost their lives when the building collapsed on February 22, 2011. When something so catastrophic happens, it is natural to want accountability, and the decision not to proceed stripped away one of the last remaining vestiges of hope that someone would be called to account. I know many of the family members from my days as a MP and, more recently, as mayor. My heart goes out to each and every one of them. I truly believed the decision would be otherwise. The local Crown Law advise was to prosecute. That local advise came from those who had been through the Royal Commission hearings from start to finish. And yet the deputy solicitor general’s interpretation of the prosecution guidelines determined otherwise. I am

aware that there are calls for changes to the law and I am certainly in favour of change but not for change’s sake. A charge of corporate manslaughter, had it been available, would have failed all the same tests in this case. Perhaps attention should turn to the prosecution decision itself – who makes the call and what are the appropriate guidelines? But that must not divert us from the real issues. When I first met the bereaved families as mayor, they told me their guiding principles were to be inclusive and to use their knowledge and experience for future good. Their overriding message was that we honour the people lost in the earthquake by learning lessons from what happened. We must continue to focus on those lessons. It brought back memories of another Royal Commission report I had read as a young law student – that was the result of the Erebus disaster. When you know the outcome, the signposts are crystal clear as you read the findings; page after page inexorably leads to the tragic conclusion. In the Erebus case, there were 10 factors, and take away any one of which may have meant the tragedy did not occur. From its very inception such was the case with the CTV

Building – from the drawing board to the fact the CTV Building was occupied on that fateful day – the signposts were there. We need to be confident that today such signposts would be points of intervention that would prevent tragedies such as this occurring again. In spite of Christchurch residents using 506 million litres of water over the weekend, the city council will not impose water restrictions – for now Jilly Ching – So many things the council could do, such as remove the grass berms and make them into cycleways, stop watering sports fields during the day, stop giving away water to overseas companies. Gayle Elizabeth Lord – Are (city council) going to restrict their own usage? I object to the amount sprayed over sports fields in the middle of the day. Fair price at the pump ONE OF the most basic pocketbook issues I hear about from people all the time is the price of fuel. There’s a real sense among the public that big variations in the price of fuel in different parts of the country isn’t fair. This is something Governments on both sides of the aisle have been working to get to the bottom of. Last week, I released an update from business ministry officials on an investigation into fuel margins. What the report found was that people’s sense was right: All the evidence was suggesting that people were paying over the odds for petrol depending on where in the country they lived. Especially hard hit by this was the Wellington region and the South Island, where fuel margins were often higher than in the rest of the North Island. Worryingly, the report also pointed out that nine years ago, New Zealand was in the bottom third of the OECD when it came to the pre-tax price of petrol. Today, we’re the highest in the developed world. According to the report, the

hundreds of millions of dollars per year. That’s not right, and we’ve got to get to the bottom of what’s going on. We know it’s important for people to have confidence they are paying a fair price when they fill up their car. That’s why we will be changing the law to empower the Commerce Commission to look at this issue. It will be given the power to compel fuel companies to hand over data on their margins and get a full look at what’s going on. While that law change is going through, I’ve also asked my officials to make recommendations about more immediate regulatory changes we could make to increase competition and ensure fairness at the pump. Our Government is backing consumers, and over the coming months, we’ll be working to make sure that no matter where you are in the country, you can be sure you’re getting a fair deal. rise in margins over the last nine years represents a transfer of

CHRISTMAS HAM ON THE BONE GLAZED WITH PINEAPPLE Ingredients 4kg ham on the bone 1 cup canned crushed pineapple, drained 1 cup brown sugar, tightly packed 1 tsp ground ginger Directions Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. Run a knife around the shank end of the ham. Carefully slice under the edge of the rind at the base of the ham. Use your fingers to ease between the rind and the fat. Pull to gently remove the rind. With a sharp knife, score

the fat with 3mm-deep cuts in a diamond pattern. Place ham in a foil-lined oven pan large enough to catch any glaze that drips as it cooks. Surround ham with one cup cold water. Drain pineapple and combine with glaze ingredients in a bowl. Smear glaze over scored fat of ham. Bake ham for 40-45min, basting at regular intervals until the glaze has caramelised to a golden brown. Rest the baked ham for at least 15min before carving. Sliced ham can either be served hot or at room temperature. ROSE PETAL MERINGUE WITH SUMMER BERRIES AND STRAWBERRY SAUCE Ingredients

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C and line a flat baking sheet with non-stick baking paper. Using an electric beater, whip the egg whites until firm, then whisk in the sugar. Fold in the cornflour and rose petals and place large spoonfuls of the mixture onto the baking sheet. Bake for 4045min.

Turn the heat up – get some chilli growing

By Henri Ham SOME LIKE it hot, and I’m one of them. I love chilli. The hotter the better as far as I’m concerned. And, I know I’m not alone. There’s a lot of excitement from other die-hard, and not-so-diehard, chilli fans. I like bhut jolokia (also known as ghost pepper) which until 2007 was the world’s hottest chilli. And in the last couple of years and there are other varieties such as chilli red hot pepper, jalapeno, jalapeno red flame and habanero Rred (measured at more than 200,000 Scoville Heat Units for those who are interested). But what’s really got people talking is carolina reaper. This chilli, named for the shape of its tail, is the current holder of the ‘world’s hottest chilli’ title and measuring an incredible 1,569,300 SHU. Though there is a pretender to the throne called dragon’s breath waiting in the wings. Carolina Reaper is in fact a hybrid of bhut jolokia and habanero red and, as I write this, I’m nibbling one I’ve grown. Great

flavour. What I also like about growing chilli, other than the taste of course, is that you don’t need a lot of space for them and once planted they don’t require much care. They grow well in confined spaces (including in pots) and thrive with little watering. Once you’ve got your seedlings or plants, look for a well-drained, sheltered and sunny spot in your garden – the same type of place you’d grow tomatoes. In fact, tomatoes are a great companion plant for chilli and they taste great together in home-made relish! Other plants you could grow your capsicums with are basil and parsley – they also like the same conditions. And, it’s also good to grow chilli near bee-friendly plants to encourage pollination. Later on, if you’re in doubt as to whether the flowers have been pollinated (which needs to happen for them to produce fruit), simply gently brush each flower with the end of a paint brush. This will spread the pollen and pollinate them. When you’ve found the right

spot to plant increase the quality of your soil by mixing in some compost and a good general fertiliser. If you’re growing your chilli in pots, simply use a good potting mix. Then plant each seedling around 40-60cm apart from the next. Give them a light watering when you plant and then just every once and a while give them another drink. You can expect to see chillies in around eight to 12 weeks. If you like things really hot, reduce your watering once the fruit have set – this is when the flowers start turning into fruit. Some chilli (like our red hot pepper) will start off green and turn red as it ages. Try to harvest the fruit by cutting, rather than pulling and do it just before they look ready – this will encourage your plant to produce more fruit. Lastly, if you’ve grown your chilli plants in pots, be sure to move them somewhere like the under the eaves of the house or indoors before the first frost. This way you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labour again next year.

State Highway 1 (SH1) north of Kaikōura will open to daytime traffic on Friday 15 December, restoring the coastal highway link from Picton to Christchurch. The re-opening of SH1 will give people two viable options for travel around the upper South Island, with the alternate route (via state highways 63, 6, 65 and 7 through Lewis Pass) remaining a reliable 24/7 option.

Suzuki Swift true to original concept By Ross Kiddie SUZUKI KNEW it had to think a little out of the box when it designed and developed the latest-generation Swift. The company has been served well by the previous generation models, and to capitalise on that success something special had to come out of the factories. I think it’s fair to say that has happened, the newcomer lands here in four variations and I know a full Sport model is set to land. Until it arrives, the range sits with a GL variant listing at $19,990, while $2000 adds automatic transmission. An automatic-only GLX sits at $24,500 while a sporty RS model sits at $25,990. The latter is a three-cylinder, 1-litre model which has a turbocharger to promote that sporty feel. The test car was the mid-spec GLX and it is far more traditional, albeit its naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine does have a displacement of just 1242cc. That’s down a little from the previous model’s 1.4-litre displacement, however, the 1.2-litre unit at 66kW and 120Nm has just about the same power outputs with greater economy than the previous engine. Like most engines from this

manufacturer, peak power is delivered high in the rev band at 6000rpm, and with maximum torque arriving at 4400rpm there is a tendency for it to rev freely. While that is a good thing, given the high cost of fuel there’s also the need to drive without wasting petrol these days. That being the case, the engine management mapping protocols are such that it moves through the gears without working unnecessarily hard. That comes with the inclusion of continuously variable automatic transmission, it doesn’t work the engine hard, instead providing drive utilising the low down characteristics of the engine, working the narrow torque spread instead of peak power.

It’s only under vigorous throttle that the engine hunts towards the top end, I found myself constantly relaxing the throttle early, acceleration seems to find its own natural way of arriving. On that subject, if you do want a quick burst to 100km/h that can be achieved from a standstill in 10.5sec. Other figures of note are Suzuki’s fuel economy claim of 4.8-litres per 100km/h (59mpg) on a combined cycle average. That’s a bold claim and one I wouldn’t dispute, at 100km/h on the highway the wee engine is sipping fuel at just 5l/100km (56mpg) with the engine turning over slowly at 1800rpm. That helped provide a fourday average of just 6.4l/100km

(44mpg) under evaluation. These are excellent figures and go some way as to comprehend why Swift has been a popular model for Suzuki. In terms of suspension engineering, the Swift’s front strut/ reartorsion beam system has spring and damper rates biased a little towards soft. That gives a compliant in-cabin ride which is perfect for the bumps and ruts of Christchurch’s roads. The trade-off is an ever-soslight body roll when pitched into a quick corner; however, that doesn’t unbalance the car, the steering is sharp and even with the rudimentary rear axle set-up, there is a handling ability far in excess of what the Swift’s design role ultimately relates too. I particularly like the feel of the

car at city speeds, it is relaxing and comfortable to be behind the wheel of. In GLX form the Swift is also relatively well appointed. It misses out on keyless entry and ignition, but that is minor, in fact, I relaxed so much more knowing the key was tucked away in the ignition barrel and not loose, therefore vulnerable to being mislaid. There is a centre console touch screen which the driver can use to navigate his/her way around the infotainment, Bluetooth and sat nav systems. It gets radar cruise control and many safety features including land departure alert. There are also alloy wheels and high quality Bridgestone low resistance tyres (185/55 x 16in) to enhance those easy-on-thebudget fuel usage figures. Until the Swift Sport lands with manual transmission, I’d really like to have a drive of the entry level GL. I know that manual cars aren’t big sellers in New Zealand, but it would appeal to me. For those who are automaticonly drivers, the new GLX is a smart car and will lure buyers from a wide cross-section. It is good value and built with the Suzuki resolve for quality and efficiency.

New service opens By Mike Yardley THE PROSPECT of a longhaul flight, while exciting, can also be daunting. For South Islanders, the added palaver of having to fly to and from Auckland, to join many long-haul services, merely protracts the whole ordeal. So it’s always good to welcome another long-haul carrier to the Southern Skies and on Saturday, Cathay Pacific Airways touched down in Christchurch on their inaugural service to the Garden City. There’s no question that it’s a major milestone for the South Island, with another premium longhaul carrier flying direct to Christchurch. In addition to existing and long-standing services out of Auckland, it’s now just one-stop away from Christchurch to wider Asia and Europe, through Hong Kong. I’ve been a regular traveller with Cathay Pacific for a decade, particularly because they boast great reach into Europe, with an extensive route network across the continent. And I’ve always considered them as being one of the world’s truly best carriers, underpinned by outstanding service, leading-edge product and exemplary safety standards. Cathay’s home port of Hong Kong is an electrifying destination in its own right. Later next year, the daring new overwater bridge will open, which will allow you to zip to Macao from Hong Kong airport in just 20min – a quicker trip than travelling into Hong Kong itself, from the airport. Coinciding with the launch of the Christchurch service, I had the pleasure of flying aboard the inaugu-

ral flight from Hong Kong last week. It’s certainly not every day you’re greeted at Christchurch Airport by the Christchurch Mayor, Lianne Dalziel, various dignitaries and a Maori performance group. Like the Auckland service, the Christchurch route is being operated by the technologically-advanced Airbus A350, the newest aircraft in Cathay Pacific’s fleet. I’m sure I could detect new plane smell. It features the airline’s latest seats and cabin products, including an enhanced inflight entertainment system and Wi-Fi connectivity across all classes of travel, business, premium economy and economy. I’m a junkie for great viewing on long-haul flights and the refreshed Studio CX entertainment system is a class act. The in-seat system is incredibly easy to use and intuitively responds like an iPad.

Champ honours beer tradition By Gordon Findlater ALL JAMES Meredith wanted to do after winning his first men’s national tennis title was bring his new trophy home so he could enjoy a bloater of Lion Brown from it. However, first he would have to twist a few Auckland arms. On Saturday, Meredith teamed up with Wellington’s Finn Tearney to win the men’s doubles title at the New Zealand tennis championships at the ASB Tennis Centre, Auckland. After receiving the trophy, Meredith inquired about taking it home with him to Christchurch on Sunday. But tournament officials indicated it was protocol for the trophy to remain in Auckland. “I managed to twist a few arms. I explained that there were a lot of people in Christchurch who would like to see the trophy. We came to an agreement that I’ll make sure the trophy gets back to Auckland in January,” said Meredith.

The 27-year-old plays interclub for Cashmere. It has become a team tradition in recent years to wind down after games with a Lion Brown in honour of club icon, the late Bob Avery. The life-member’s favourite beverage had been on a steady decline in sales behind the club bar until the Cashmere premier men’s team started a ‘save the Bob’ campaign to keep the drink stocked. “It tastes like clubrooms,” said Meredith. “Once it hits your lips, it’s so good.” Meredith and Tearney did not drop a set on the way to the final in which they defeated the Reynolds brothers, Finn and Rob, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, in a third set super tie-breaker. Meredith was the standout player on the court with Simon Rea – match commentator and former coach of controversial Australian pro Nick Kyrgios – making reference to Meredith’s “world class display of serving”. “I was hoping to have a drink

Third generation Hartland tipped for big future By Gordon Findlater THE HARTLAND name looks set to keep its place in Canterbury cricket for a third generation after Ben Hartland picked up one of sport’s most prestigious awards. Hartland, 18, (right) was named the joint winner of the Geoffrey Palmer Cup after successfully captaining Christchurch Boys’ High School to their fifth national secondary schools first XI title in Palmerston North last week. The cup is awarded to the most valuable player at the tournament. At the tournament, Hartland scored 346 runs (the most of any

player), including a century and three half centuries at an average of 86.50. He will share the cup with Otago Boys’ High School leftarm spinner Ben Lockrose. The only other time the cup has been shared was when it was jointly won by Kane Williamson and Tim Southee in 2007. “I haven’t really had a good look at the trophy because I gave it to the other fellow. We’ll swap it over at an awards dinner next year,” said Hartland. The right-handed batsman’s next objective is to follow in the footsteps of his father Blair Hartland and play at the highest level. Blair represented Canterbury

83 times at first-class level and played nine tests and 16 one-day internationals as an opening batsman for New Zealand in the 1980s and 90s.

Hartland ’s grandfather Ian Hartland also represented Canterbury 16 times at first-class level in the 1960s. “I guess it is in the blood. His father had a strong influence during his early development. “I was actually a left-handed batsman until I was about five and then dad said I swapped to right-handed because I wanted to bat like him,” said Hartland. “He’s pretty much just a spectator now. To be fair his shoulders and arms aren’t really up to throwing me balls anymore

but he’s always there for a bit of advice when I ask for it.” Hartland has now finished his school cricket with CBHS. However, he looks set to continue the next stage of his cricketing career in North Canterbury with some familiar faces. As many as half a dozen of this year’s CBHS first XI team are set to play their club cricket for Cheviot in the Canterbury Country premier competition next year. “It’s a really cool atmosphere and a pretty nice ground out there. With staying around for university in Christchurch, I want to have a bit of a change in scene because I’ve lived here my whole life,” said Hartland.
